Near Picture Perfect May Weather Ahead to Begin Week—But 'Pneumonia Front' Set to Tumble Temps Tuesday Evening 7 day outlook:  Buckingham Fountain downtown might have switched on for summer yesterday-- but Mother Nature is a bit behind with those summery temps for Mom's Day weekend in Chicago. Temps on Sunday were cooler than normal, especially by the lake. Some near picture perfect May weather ahead for the beginning of the week as high pressure building in from OntarioWe could see some hazier skies with the sunshine thanks to wildfires burning out of control in parts of Alberta province. While our air quality could take a bit of a hit—most often the particulate matter in the skies could end up making our sunrises and sunsets quite ironically beautiful since it can scatter the light into some amazing colors. Keep those cameras handy! This coming week temps inland climb into the seasonal 70s, if inland temps are too warm— it's cooler by the lake just about every day this week. More clouds and still mild as we get into the later week and next weekend with a chance of showers/t-storms each aft...

Sharks get a bit unlucky with one of their first-round draft picks (and their ex-goalie played a role) The San Jose Sharks found out on May 8 that their first pick in this year’s NHL Draft will be at No. 4 overall. They also now know where their second first-round selection will be.The Vegas Golden Knights eliminated the Edmonton Oilers from the Stanley Cup playoffs on Sunday, earning s 5-2 win to capture the best-of-seven series four games to two. With Vegas winning, the Sharks will now have the 26th overall selection in the draft, which begins June 28 in Nashville.Had the Oilers won the series, the Sharks’ second first-round pick would have been at No. 25 overall.Interestingly enough, the Sharks have one of their former goalies to blame, so to speak, for falling an extra spot. Two days after he made 32 saves for the Golden Knights in their 4-3 victory over Edmonton in Game 5, Adin Hill made 39 saves in Game 6 as Vegas eliminated the Oilers.Hill played for the Sharks for one season before he was traded to the Golden Knights on Aug. 29 of last year for a 2024 fourth-round pick. With #V...

Inter’s march to brink of Champions League final owes much to beating Barcelona MILAN (AP) — When Inter Milan kicked off its Champions League campaign with a loss at home to Bayern Munich, few would have imagined that eight months later the Nerazzurri would be on the brink of their first final in more than a decade. But that is the situation Inter is in as it takes a 2-0 lead into the second leg of its semifinal series against AC Milan on Tuesday, having vastly outplayed its city rival in the first match at San Siro last week.Back in September, it seemed unlikely that Inter would even advance past the group stage.Simone Inzaghi’s team had just lost 2-0 at home to Bayern, which was favorite to qualify from the group along with Barcelona. But Inter managed to beat Barcelona at home and draw 3-3 in Spain. And it was those matches that gave the Inter team the belief it could fight for its first European title since it won the league, Italian Cup and Champions League under José Mourinho in 2010.“We work together seven days a week, we went through difficult moments, th...

Auschwitz museum begins emotional work of conserving 8,000 shoes of murdered children OSWIECIM, Poland (AP) — In a modern conservation laboratory on the grounds of the former Auschwitz camp, a man wearing blue rubber gloves uses a scalpel to scrape away rust from the eyelets of small brown shoes worn by children before they were murdered in gas chambers.Colleagues at the other end of a long work table rub away dust and grime, using soft cloths and careful circular motions on the leather of the fragile objects. The shoes are then scanned and photographed in a neighboring room and catalogued in a database. The work is part of a two-year effort launched last month to preserve 8,000 children’s shoes at the former concentration and extermination camp where German forces murdered 1.1 million people during World War II. Most of the victims were Jews killed in dictator Adolf Hitler’s attempt to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The site was located during the war in a part of Poland occupied by German forces and annexed to the German Reich.
